Did you know that, in some states across the nation, a career in forensic science is more lucrative than it is in other states? There are multiple reasons for this, such as the demand for qualified forensic scientists, the number of jobs available, and more, but what will matter most to you, as an Oregon resident, is that Oregon is one of the more highly paying states in the nation.

This means that by doing the same work as you would elsewhere, you can earn more money just because of where you live.

The national average salary for a forensic scientist is approximately $45,000 per year, which is actually quite low compared to other professions. In the Southern United States, people often earn even lower than the average. In Oregon, however, the average yearly salary for a forensic science professional is approximately $52,000 per year.

The best news of all is that, even with an already higher than average salary, there are still things that you can do to further increase your earnings. This means that on top of already making more money because of where you live, you can make even more money. What could be better?

One of the simplest and most straightforward ways to increase your earnings is to increase the amount of education you already possess. So, if you start working in the field with only an associate’s degree, which is unlikely but still possible, you could increase your earnings by obtaining a bachelor’s degree.

If you have a bachelor’s degree already, you should aim for your master’s degree, and if you have a master’s degree, you should go for a doctoral level degree or a PhD. Even if you have already obtained the highest level of education possible, you can earn a higher salary through continuing education opportunities, such as certification courses and just simple classes not resulting in a degree or certificate.

In addition to increasing your educational level or instead of doing so, you might also want to give some serious thought to the city in which you live and/or work. Surprisingly, professionals living in larger, more urban areas of Oregon, such as Portland, make quite a bit more money than those in rural or suburban areas doing the exact same type of work.

This is, of course, partially due to the increased cost of living in larger cities, but also to the greater demand for such professionals in larger areas.

Finally, don’t forget that the best way to increase your salary and to qualify for promotions, which will also usually increase your salary in itself, is to be the best worker you can be.

If you give your all to your job, no matter whether or not it is your dream job or just a stepping stone, your employer will be sure to notice and will reward you accordingly. So, do everything you can to increase your salary, but don’t forget the most basic thing.
